KINABATANGAN: In a significant step toward wildlife conservation, Pangolin Awareness Day was recently held at the Kinabatangan Library on 18th October 2025, bringing critical attention to the plight of the critically endangered pangolin. The event was organized by Pangolin Aware, in collaboration with the Sabah Wildlife Department (Kinabatangan) and the State Library of Sabah (Kinabatangan).
While pangolins were at the heart of the event, the programme extended its focus to the broader challenge of protecting all endangered species and preserving Sabah’s rich biodiversity. Exhibitions and awareness activities featured conservation efforts across various species and threatened ecosystems.
Key participants included the Conservation and Biodiversity Unit of SKG Green Sdn Bhd, which highlighted its ongoing work in wildlife conservation and raised awareness about persistent threats such as poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and habitat destruction. Other contributors included the Sabah Wildlife Department, KOPEL, Seratu Aatai, Hutan and Orangutan Appeal, all of whom provided informative displays and shared critical insights into conservation efforts across the region.
Students from SMK Bukit Garam I, SMK Bukit Garam II, and SMK Paris actively took part in the educational sessions and interactive exhibitions. The event was also open to the public, allowing community members and visitors to learn more about Sabah’s unique wildlife and the urgent need for conservation.
By involving the community especially the younger generation, the Pangolin Awareness Day successfully fostered deeper understanding and long term commitment to wildlife protection. It served as a powerful reminder that conservation is a collective responsibility, crucial to safeguarding Sabah’s natural heritage for future generations.
