KINABATANGAN: From 17th to 20th February 2025, Sawit Kinabalu Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU), in collaboration with the Fire Team from Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), organized a comprehensive training program focused on Forest Fire Prevention and Control. The event brought together 23 participants from CBU, Sg. Pin Estate, Gomantong Estate, Green Estate, and the local community from Mukim Batu Puteh, Kinabatangan. The training was also attended by Tn. In addition to the training, Tn. Daim Balingi with Sabah Forestry Department staffs and CBU participated in a tree planting activity at SPnCA, in line with the campaign to plant 100 million trees. This initiative not only highlighted the importance of reforestation efforts but also complemented the fire prevention and sustainability goals of the training.

The four-day program covered critical topics, including the dangers of open burning, fire laws, and strategies for controlling and extinguishing forest fires. Participants learned about the Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS), fire terminology, and the Incident Command System (ICS). They also gained practical skills for managing fires by successfully implementing fire guard and fire break strategies using hand tools, water pumps, and communication systems.

On the final day, the 4 teams tackled real-world fire scenarios, applying their knowledge to develop detailed action plans. The training not only enhanced technical skills but also fostered collaboration, preparing participants for effective forest fire management.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to organize the second batch of this training, especially for Sawit Kinabalu. It will boost participants’ practical skills, ensuring they’re well-prepared for any fire incidents on the estate, while also strengthening their RSPO qualifications. This training not only helps protect the environment but also strengthens local livelihoods, equipping participants with essential fire management skills to build a more resilient, fire-aware community. This training is a vital step towards enhancing both immediate response capabilities and long-term sustainability for Sawit Kinabalu.
