The Orangutan Diplomacy program, led by the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF), highlights Malaysia’s commitment to in-situ conservation of Bornean orangutans, focusing on their protection in natural habitats, including High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within oil palm plantations. A key site for this initiative is the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) in Kinabatangan, Sabah, which serves as a sanctuary for 55 orangutans. This effort underscores the integration of biodiversity conservation within sustainable palm oil landscapes.

Through an innovative adoption program, the initiative invites individuals, organizations, and international palm oil importers to contribute to orangutan conservation. Funds raised support habitat restoration, including planting fruit and forest trees, and maintaining ranger teams to monitor orangutans’ safety and health.

The program, inspired by China’s panda diplomacy, aims to foster collaboration and improve the global image of Malaysia’s palm oil industry by demonstrating its alignment with sustainability and conservation priorities.

SPnCA’s inclusion in this diplomacy showcases its vital role in safeguarding orangutan populations while promoting coexistence in mixed-use landscapes.
