The Conservation & Biodiversity Unit (CBU) participated as one of the exhibitors at the Orangutan Caring Week on the 20th November 2023 at Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, Sandakan. It was the Unit first (1st) participation in such event in which we shared our booth with our own Project Partner OrangJuga. Thank you OrangJuga for sharing spaces with us!. Orangutan caring week is a worldwide event held annually every November to raise awareness for the critically endangered orangutan. In Sabah, the Orangutan Week celebration is one of the awareness campaign activities as detailed in the Orangutan Action Plan 2020-2029 for Sabah which aims to provide exposure about the animal and their habitats.
The program was inaugurated by Director of Sabah Wildlife Department, Augustine Tuuga on behalf of the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, YB Datuk Christina Liew. This year, the programme is jointly held by the Wildlife Department, Sandakan Municipal Council, Orangutan UK Appeal and NGO Hutan with the theme “Forest Guardians: Empowering Communities for Conservation”.
This event was our stepping stone to showcase what we do in giving awareness to the public about Orangutan conservation that we’re doing at SPnCA.
